What Makes a Good Project Board?

A board is only as useful as its columns. What to include, what to cut, and how to keep it honest.

Columns are a workflow, not a wish

Good columns mirror how work actually moves through your process, not how you'd like it to. If nothing ever sits in 'Review', that column is noise. If everything piles up in 'In Progress', you may be missing a stage.

Limit work in progress

The single most useful board habit is capping how much can sit in progress at once. A WIP limit turns a board from a to-do list laid sideways into a tool that surfaces bottlenecks.

Keep cards small

A card that never moves is usually too big. Breaking it into smaller cards makes progress visible and keeps the board from feeling stuck.
