The Difference Between Goals, Projects, and Tasks

Three words people use interchangeably, why the distinction matters, and how to file things correctly.

A quick definition of each

  • A task is a single action you can finish in one sitting.
  • A project is a set of tasks that together produce one outcome.
  • A goal is the reason the project matters — the change you're after.

Why filing matters

When a goal is written as a task ('get healthier'), it sits on your list undone forever, because it isn't actionable. When a project is treated as a task ('launch the site'), it feels stuck, because it's really ten tasks wearing one label.

Filing each at the right level makes the next action obvious and keeps big ambitions from cluttering a daily list.
